When people think about home security more often than not, images of panic rooms, control panels loaded with brain boggling buttons and the ever so false frequent alarm sounding off seem to come to mind. While homeowners are invested in the idea of home security, the options, as far as what’s out there on the market can be pretty confusing. As technologies change and prices fluctuate, getting primed on the whole home security milieu is difficult. It’s hard to filter through all the components if you’re not an expert. Fortunately, though as technology has evolved, the choices and options become simpler.

Before, you’d think about mainly hardwired systems. These of course are built into to the house and would entail having wires running every which way back to the main control panel. These types of systems have since evolved over the last decade or two and not only are they more affordable, no longer being the mainstays of the upper crust; they are also much less cumbersome. Today, most modern home alarm systems utilize wireless technology. This has obvious advantages over hardwired systems.

For one, wireless systems are much more flexible, they’re more forgiving. A hardwired alarm system is ideal for those buying a house that’s in construction; however, if you’re purchasing an older house, alterations do need to be made—think torn up floor boards, hammering into walls, holes, etc. A wireless system is thus a less expensive solution that still holds up its end of the bargain. Technology has really come a long way.

Crime, of course, is unrelenting. One robber goes to jail and another steps up to the plate. It’s like a criminal conveyor belt out there. Home security, then is a definite necessity; even in the most well to do neighborhoods, there’s a need for added security measures. It doesn’t matter if you live in the projects or on Park Avenue, crime happens.

Your basic modern home alarm system consists of a control panel which is hooked up to various sensors placed throughout your home as well as alarm sirens. These usually start at around $150-200 for set up and installation. You can usually add on monthly monitoring for $30 a month.

For added defense, you can add infrared motion sensors and 24/7 monitoring. These sensors can detect movement and heat within a 40 square foot area. Integrated smoke and CO detectors which can tap into the monitoring system and report any fires or high levels of carbon monoxide are also increasingly popular. These are also more effective than those which simply sound off inside the home whenever there’s smoke.

Homeowners that can afford something extra can spend thousands of dollars for a home automation system. A fully integrated system can control everything from the temperature of the house to closing the blinds and window shades automatically at 10 pm. These systems can also connect with cell phones or computers so that homeowners can monitor their homes from anywhere in the world.

When you have a vacation, go to your office or simply stay at home, one of the most essential things you have to check is your home and your belongings.  They should be away from threat and destruction from fire.  There are a lot of home safety devices, coming from high end to low end, which will secure your home free from danger.  While the home security devices discussed below may differ from one office to another, their primary features are somewhat the same.

One of the very vital home security devices is the alarm system.  In these times, you can choose from various alarm devices.  The most common type is the siren.  When somebody intrudes your home, they you will hear it sound very loud.  To deactivate this thing, you will need to encode a secret code with a specific period of time.  If on going inside your home, you do not have to enter the numbers correctly, the alarm can detect the presence of the stranger and will turn off.  There are different high end systems that can detect movement that can trigger if it can sense any movement inside the house.  There are normally installed in large offices.

Apart from that, you can also install sensor light in your house.  If movement is detected outside the home, the sensor lights up immediately.  While this is quite expensive, but it is very functional.  In addition to that, it will also ensure your device outside as well as your car.

Safe is another system that can be used in your house.  Although, a lot of your belongings should be put in the bank, but the items that you hold at home will be safest in a vault.

Putting audio and video home security devices can also be beneficial.  There are several types out in the market.  You can either place them inside or outside of your house.  There are also wireless cameras that are designed for house use.  You do not need to worry when rainy days because they have water resistant features.  All the shots are recorded and can be watched on the security monitors.  You can also have a copy of the video by saving them in a hard drive of your desktop computer.  In general, these CCTV cams have motion detectors in them, which will begin to record once they sense movement.

Fire alarms are also included in your list of home security devices.  The monitoring services can be performed for both the probable threat of a fire and medical emergencies.  There are various types of software packages that can be installed to connect the security systems in your house with your PC.  They are combined into a single computerized system in order for you to monitor them better.  In these times, you can also get home automation hardware and software that can shut off or one your house safety device when you leave your home

Creating a start of the art home can mean many different things to many people. However, The Joseph Rowntree Foundation did a study of the market potential for Smart Homes (state of the art homes) and came up with this helpful definition:-”Smart Homes use electronic networking technology to integrate the various devices and appliances found in almost all homes, plus building environment systems more common in factories and offices, so that an entire home can be controlled centrally or remotely as a single machine. This technology offers the prospect of significant improvements in the living standards of older, sick and disabled people who, without automated domestic activities, might otherwise be totally reliant on home care.”

Their study shows that most people wanted a smart home to help with security and safety, access their home and items in it remotely and because it should save people time and money:- Reference: Joseph Rowntree Foundation Following this study, we cover these three elements within this section, as well as explaining one of the biggest topics for State of the Art Homes ‘multi room visual and audio entertainment’. We have also trawled the magazines, shows and the internet to try and find some tantalising ’state of the art’ home products which for most will just be a dream, but are still great fun to investigate!Networking Your HomeThis is one of the main features of any state of the art or smart home. Basically it involves a system which integrates all the utilities and technology in your home. There are many companies who now offer to network your home, but be careful that you choose a company that is happy to give you case studies and work to ensure that they minimise the damage to your home through installing network cables/features.The basic idea of networking is that your (or a) PC runs everything in your home and you have an easy to use ‘interface’ to turn on, off, adjust, or change your heating, entertainment, security, lighting, appliances and any other super gadgets you have in your home. It is worth reading up as much as possible if you are considering doing this as it is complex and you need to make sure you get a system which has a company that can provide the best customer service in case anything goes wrong.ResearchTo start, checkout these articles and websites to help understand exactly what networking is and what you need to think about for your home:-Although a site for businesses, the information by Next Wave Technology  summarises what networking is and how it works.Whole Home Systems explains well what this technology can do for your home. Custom Electronic Design and Installation Association which have a members’ directory to search for companies to work with. The ‘Beginners Guide to Home Automation’ is a book you might like to read. What you need to think about when considering networking your homeThe most important thing to think about is what do you want the system to do? Is it for security reasons that you want the system, or do you want to control everything from lights, to the individual temperature of a radiator at a button?

Once you have a list of what you would like the system to do and why, then you should think about how much you want to disrupt your home. Are you happy for it to be completely rewired and redecorate after, or would you prefer to look at wireless options? After that, it’s a matter of budget. Perhaps you would like to do it a bit at a time, so you may need a system that can be added to, or you might want to do it in one go, it all depends on how much you want to spend and what are the main features that you want to concentrate on.

For more information about what to consider, look at the Joseph Rowntree Foundations’ checklist. For more help on networking your home, go to the CEDIA website and find companies in your area, look in our Additional Resources Section and go through the ’smart home examples’ to learn more about homes that have already been created with ‘intelligent systems’.Security and SafetyWe already have access to quite sophisticated security and safety features, some of them incredibly simple and cheap to install. For example, one of the easiest ways to make your home that bit more secure – particularly when you are out – is to use timer plug ins. These allow you switch on your lights or any other appliance such as a radio or TV remotely at specific times during the day and night.Other features that are easy to purchase and install and are considered ’standard’ these days are CCTV equipment to protect your home. So what technology is required to move your home to ’smart home’ status and improve security and status? There are several new features that have been developed for state of the art or smart homes, but it might be useful to checkout what security features you need for you home, by going to Home Security Action  for their Security Review and Checklist and A Guide to Home Security by Crime Reduction UK. State of the Art LocksIf you frequently lose your keys, then this is ideal, Finger Print Door Locks! Basically they do what they say on the tin – instead of keys, you get into your home by using your fingerprint, something you are unlikely to ever leave behind! There are several companies that do this, but the main one to look at in the UK appears to be UK Biometrics. Checkout prices for these products, but expect to pay from £200 per lock. Do get independent advice as to the safety of these products – ideally find someone who already uses them or ask the company for some case studies or referrals. State of the Art CCTVIt’s OK having CCTV at home or somewhere where you can access the internet, but what if you are not there to watch it? What if you are half way around the world? Don’t despair, our mobiles are now being put to good use through a CCTV system that sends a text to your mobile if something sparks movement for a camera. As long as you are not in the country with lots of wildlife around triggering the system every few minutes, it means you can keep tabs on what’s happening in your home.

State of the Art Integrated Central LockingThis is an incredibly neat system. Rather than having to worry about locking every window or door, or worrying whether you locked anything or not, then this home version of car central locking is definitely worth a look!Additional Information Budgets vary for State of the Art Home Security, varying from £500 to £5,000 – I guess it depends how much stuff you have in your home!Smart ProductsThere are many products that you can have in your home these days, from the now well written about fridge with a screen, and internet connection to a wireless system allowing you to access the net from anywhere around the home. However, if you know where to look, there are even more ‘wow’ smart home products that you can purchase. Some are surprisingly affordable, while others run into the hundreds of thousands.Kitchen Anyone living in a sophisticated smart home would want to have the best wines. Once you do have the best wine, the next most important thing to do is to have the very best place to keep them. Try the Spiral Cellars wine cellar. It claims that you can install it anywhere under floor, but I’m not sure we all have space for 1,600 bottles of wine under our floor!Bathroom For the best bathing experience in the world, try this bath out. It’s fully illuminated and even incorporates a waterfall! Feel free to invite your friends around, seems to fit. Visit Teuco. If showers are more your thing, try the Tray Bien a new up-market, sleek shower tray. It fits flush with the floor and the waste is nicely covered over, so no horrible hairs in the morning. Visit Kaldewei or try the ‘rain shower’ it’s amazing! For the ultimate experience in ‘bathroom entertainment’ think about tiling your bathroom with a TileVision – yes it’s all built in and if installed properly should be extremely safe.Bedroom Fancy having a plasma screen that appears or disappears as you instruct at the bottom of your bed? Visit Mayflower Designs.

AccessoriesThe digital picture player, a bit gimmicky, but great if you are a fan of photos. Basically they play your digital photos through a TFT LCD screen and you can programme the ‘photo frames’ to play the pictures you want at the frequency you want.Inspirational Heating from AestusMaking radiators a design feature in your home. Visit Aestus.Innovative FeaturesMemory clocks, overflow alerts, voice prompts, all via a housing association!

Smart Home ExamplesAs smart home technology begins to influence our lives more and more, new homes developers are starting to implement technology into the home from the start of construction. Here are some examples of how technology is being implemented into homes around the country:-

  • Home Security - Choosing the Right Product

Tags: Alarm System, Burglar Alarm, Floodlight, Home Security, Motion Sensor,

The bad news is that crime statistics, death, injuries, home intrusions, and loss of property continue to rise. It is hard to believe, but according to FBI statistics a burglary occurs every 15 seconds in the United States.

The good news is that there has never been a time when such a variety of quality security equipment has been available, and at such affordable prices. Let’s fight back!

When talking about home security equipment, one size does not fit all. Security equipment must be tailored to meet the particular needs of each house or company. One may need entry detection, while another needs camera surveillance, and another may need motion-detection floodlights. Let us look at some of the many choices available.

Home Security Systems – Many articles have been written on this subject and the basics are probably known by most readers. Systems are either wired or wireless, just as the names imply. For a renter, a wireless system is the logical choice, as the installation does little if any damage to the premises. And, the system can be taken when the renter moves. Wired is the system of choice in an owned residence, but it has its pros and cons. Because wires are run from every protected point to the alarm control panel, holes must be drilled and wires fastened. However, when done by a professional company, the work is done with care and is mostly concealed. Labor is the main contributor to the high cost of a wired system. At today’s labor rates, several technicians working in your house for a week can run up quite a bill. A money saving tip here is do-it-yourself. If you have the basic knowledge to fix a lamp cord, you can read the wiring diagrams and install a wired system at a budget cost. Your car, motorcycle, camper, or boat on trailer, can also be connected to the security system. Many types of motion detectors are available, some even “pet friendly”. Regardless of wired or wireless, ultimately either system can sound a local alarm, connect to a monitoring station, call your mobile phone, or be custom tailored to meet the exact needs of the user.

Surveillance Cameras – Like home security systems, cameras come in two types, wired or wireless. When the door bell rings, how comforting to see who is at the front door. Now, even low cost systems can view multiple points, and display all cameras on just one split screen monitor. Camera products change rapidly, offering more and more features at lower and lower prices. One of the best recent offerings is an outdoor motion-activated floodlight and color camera combination. It does not get any better than that! Disturbing statistics show that we cannot always trust persons in our house, like the baby-sitter or a serviceman. A wireless hidden camera provides an ideal solution for this case. It is, in fact, one of the most popular home security items. Other uses for an indoor camera include keeping watch on your prized possessions, and of course keeping watch over your baby.

Home Automation – Here is an area of products you will want to look at while security shopping. The evolution of security products has blended into a new category of home automation products. We have traveled well beyond the wireless garage door opener. Your home computer can now be used to control appliances, lighting, cameras, store camera video files, check on your home, turn on and off your security lighting and even your sprinkler system!

  • Home Security Appliance Control System - What's Fabulous In It?

    themovingforwardguy 9:31 pm on November 25, 2009 | 0 Permalink | Reply
Tags: Home Security, home security appliance control system, home security appliances

Modern technology helps homeowners monitor both home security and home appliances at the same time.
This one-touch home automation makes it possible to control each room in your house. By setting one central control panel, you can tell your coffee pot when to start brewing, your turn your lights on and off, open or close the garage door, or turn on the garage light to help you get to your car.
You can arrive home after work to a gleaming porch light gleaming and your favorite music welcoming you. You can go to sleep to the sounds of your favorite DVD or your favorite late-night TV show. With this customizable home automation, you can program your house to keep you with your family’s routines.
Central to the home security appliance system is the remote control linked to the system center. Through the control system center, you use the remote control to operate the alarm system, the television, your DVD player and stereo, the home entertainment center, and – yes – even your coffee pot. Some systems even have accessory remote controls that you can attach to your key chain and operate from your car.
A few examples things a top-quality home security appliance control system will do include:
    - turn appliances, wall switches, and lighting off and on
    - adjusting the thermostat for hourly temperature fluctuations
    - program events for specific times
    - set lighting and heating systems to automatically adjust for changing sunrise and sunset hours
    - control holiday lighting
    - open and close drapes
Easy to learn to operate, the best systems are user-friendly so that you don’t have to worry about a steep learning-curve. You don’t have to re-wire your home for the wireless systems, and you can program timed routines to continue daily (great for when you’re traveling). These convenient features create the illusion that someone’s home when the house is most vulnerable – when no one’s there.
Once equipped with an automated home security appliance system, your smart home will be the envy of the neighborhood. As happens with any new technology, the systems prices are beginning to come down. However, at this time, the cost may be imposing to budget-conscious homeowners.
While the novelty of automatic normal household appliances is attractive, the security and peace of mind that these systems provide is their greatest value. Home security appliance control systems gives you the comfort of knowing you can control conditions in your home any time, from any place. You can monitor your home and, in emergencies, the alarm will sound. You’ll be notified, and calls will go out to the police or fire departments.
With a home security appliance system, you can rest knowing that the system will shut off ventilation and gas and then light escape exits while it notifies the fire department about fire or gas leaks.
The system also helps you save money and energy by controlling home heating and cooling systems while you’re away from the house. You can make those energy-efficient lights, water heaters, kitchen appliances, and other appliances even more energy-efficient by programming start-up and shut-down times. You can even control the thermostat throughout the day.
Home security appliance control systems offer a comprehensive integrated solution to home management. They let you control almost every element in your house and save time and money in the process. The extra bonus is the peace of mind they bring.
Isn’t it time that you looked into a home security appliance control system for your house?
